Strong Leadership for Federal Way

Melissa's Priorities

  • Public Safety

Public safety is the foundation for a strong, thriving community. Whether at home, walking through our neighborhoods, or visiting our parks and local businesses, everyone in Federal Way deserves to feel safe. Public safety is not a privilege—it’s a priority for everyone. I am committed to investing in effective solutions and policies that protect and serve all residents while supporting law enforcement in their efforts to uphold the law and hold those who harm our community accountable. Additionally, I will work to continually improve our officer staffing levels to ensure timely responses to emergencies, reduce response times for non-emergencies, and strengthen community policing efforts. By investing in the resources our police officers need, we can meet the growing demands of our city.

  • Community Investment

Every year, our city collects significant revenue through sales tax, property tax, and real estate excise tax. While Federal Way retains some of these funds for local services and infrastructure, the state determines how a substantial portion is allocated. I will fight to bring those tax dollars back to Federal Way, ensuring they are reinvested directly into our community.

I envision a Federal Way with a dedicated senior center for our older residents, teen centers and programs to support and engage our youth, and transportation improvements that make our city safer, more walkable, and easier to navigate. As your steadfast advocate, I will work tirelessly to secure the investments that will make Federal Way a better place for everyone.

  • Responsible Taxation

I firmly oppose any property tax increases by the city if the state legislature lifts the property tax levy lid. Just as families must live within their means, so must our government. Federal Way families are already facing rising costs due to inflation, and it’s critical that we prioritize fiscal responsibility. As a city, Federal Way must spend wisely and sustainably, ensuring we meet our needs without burdening our residents with higher taxes. I will advocate for responsible taxation that puts the financial stability of our community and residents first.

  • Economic Development

Small businesses are the heart of our community, and when they succeed, we all succeed. I am committed to supporting policies that attract new businesses, strengthen existing ones, and create jobs that provide opportunities for our families. By fostering a resilient local economy, we can ensure long-term growth and prosperity. The investments we make in our downtown core today are investments in the future—building a foundation that will benefit generations to come. I will advocate for initiatives and policies that create a thriving, sustainable economy for Federal Way.
